Nez Perce/Latah Counties Women’s Business Network

This upcoming Women’s Business Network event is going to be a great one!

There is no cost to attend, but an rsvp would be greatly appreciated by our host, Furry Tale Farms.  There’s just no place like Furry Tale Farm to pamper your mind, body, and soul.  Come learn what these women are doing to showcase their businesses.

For any of you that would like to carpool to the event from Kendrick, we will be meeting in front of Furry Tale Mercantile on Main Street at 12:15 pm.  The event is from 1-3 pm so we will be returning to Kendrick at 3:00 pm.  If you would like to follow us in your own car that’s fine too.

Dress is casual and hopefully, we will have a nice sunny spring day.

The guest speaker is Julie Myrick Glenn, owner of the House of JuJu franchise, now in Orofino, ID and Clovis, CA, Morro Bay, CA, and soon to be Visalia, CA. She will be speaking to us about how to survive as an entrepreneur in today’s economic climate.

Pamela Caughey, Unforeseen at Moscow Contemporary Opening Oct 7th

Pamela Caughey, Unforeseen

October 7 – December 31, 2022

Exhibition Reception: October 7, 5 – 7 p.m.

Gallery Artist Talk: October 8, 11 a.m.

For Moscow Contemporary’s fourth exhibit we present “Pamela Caughey, Unforeseen.” Hamilton, MT artist Caughey works in diverse media. She creates geometric abstract paintings across separate and overlapping media including encaustic, acrylics, oil, mixed media, and collage. Regular patterns are disrupted by sharp line and color changes to create moments of tension in balance with areas of calm. The exhibit includes more than a dozen large multi-panel pieces and a range of smaller works. Pam has developed a devoted following and online teaching platform during the pandemic. To engage her new students Pam invited them to send her color swatches from their studios. She then created a small piece based on what she received. Not knowing how this would turn out, it has culminated in the group project “Snail Mail” comprised of 150 individual panels.

Perkins House

James Allen Perkins came to the area in 1870, when he was 29 years old. He and Thomas Smith traveled from Waitsburg to set up a sawmill at the suggestion of Anderson Cox, who speculated that the valley along the South Fork of the Palouse might make a fine location for a new settlement. They proceeded to build a log cabin with timber hauled from Walla Walla. Both Smith and Perkins staked out property. The two men split the valley, Perkins taking the northern part. He purchased a pre-emption on 160 acres at $2.50/acre. The line separating the two parcels ran east to west and later became Last Street.

SIGN-UP FOR PALOUSE PLEIN AIR 2022

PALOUSE PLEIN AIR: September 5 – 15, 2022

Palouse Plein Air is an annual painting event that takes place every September, with experiences including painting workshops and a juried exhibition at the Third Street Gallery inside Moscow City Hall.

Historic Moscow, Idaho and the beautiful Palouse are the perfect destination for plein air artists, and the annual Palouse Plein Air painting event connects artists with the region’s landscape and arts culture.  French for “open air,” the phrase “plein air” (pronounced plen-air) describes the act of painting outdoors. The outdoor experience on the Palouse is particularly rich, as its rolling hills, rivers, mountains, fields, farms, and homes tell the long history of the landscape.

Guided by the vision of the Moscow Arts Commission and University of Idaho art professor Aaron Cordell Johnson, Palouse Plein Air began in 2010, and the event continues to grow. A collaboration of community partners makes this growth possible; the City of Moscow Arts Department and the University of Idaho College of Art + Architecture work together to make a great event for artists and art lovers alike.

Spring Art Exhibits at the Libey Gallery

Spring Art Exhibits at the Libey Gallery

The Libey Gallery invites the community during the month of April to visit two new exhibits by Colfax artist Lynnea Vantrease and Kennewick photographer Nancy Richter.

Lynnea Vantrease, a self-taught painter enjoys painting the outdoors from florals to landscapes using mainly oils and acrylics. She hopes that through her work one feels inspired to slow down and enjoy simple beauty. The inspiration and theme for her current exhibit, “Walk with Me” is the chance for her to share how she sees the world.

“Perfectly Palouse” photography exhibit by Nancy Ritcher was inspired by the beauty of the Palouse. Since Nancy was 12 years old, she always had a camera to record people and places, flowers and weathered paint, animals and events. It is her love of clouds that inspired her to start wandering the back roads of the Northwest looking for land to match the clouds.

The Libey Gallery is located in The Bettie Steiger Center adjacent to Colfax Library. The gallery open hours are Monday-Friday 10:00 am to 6 pm and Saturday 1:00-5:00 pm.

Summer Workshops at Moscow Contemporary are here!

Photopoetry: Reframing Landscapes

Generate and assemble writing and landscape photography to create a multi-media narrative through the use of images, text and/or audio recording.

With Teaching Artists Megan Mack and Abby Wooten

June 18 2022,11am to 6pm (4pm to 6pm at Philips Farm Park)

June 19, 2022, 12pm to 6pm

$215

Ages 18 +

Please bring a water bottle and sack lunch. Snack provided.

Instructors Megan Mack and Abby Wooten will teach how to convey narrative and landscape photography using images and text or audio narration. We will encourage participants to think about the narrative of the entire scene beyond the frame, using the question of what is missing or what we don’t see as a guide post. We will talk about tone, poetic sentences, storytelling, and poems. How do words enhance the image? How do words create new meaning?

What? This two day intensive workshop is to help artists and anyone with an interest in photography delve deeper into the idea behind language and imagery, with an introduction to photo-poetry and landscape photography

The term ‘photopoetry’ is a form in which combinations of poems and photographs create illustrative, evocative, and symbiotic relationships between text and image.
The idea behind this workshop is to create a photographic piece that moves beyond the aesthetic landscape image.

Complete a piece of digital, printed, or photographic work with text. You will explore “what is captured within the frame” and “what is purposely left out”.

The Homecoming

A recent addition to Moscow’s public art portfolio, “The Homecoming” is located on the couplet of North Main and C streets. Tacoma-based artists, Jennifer Corio and David Frei were impressed by the rolling hills of the Palouse and wanted to be sure to incorporate elements that pay tribute to this unique landscape.  The birds symbolize the welcoming culture of Moscow, a “sense of slowing down, of coming home,” and the social connectivity that makes Moscow a special place!

What’s on Your Bookshelf?

This bookshelf is a collaborative effort of 22 members of Palouse Women Artists.  Each painted, collaged, or assembled a 9 x 12 cradle board that was then assembled into this bookshelf.  It made its debut at the 1912 Center and is currently on loan to Bookpeople in Moscow.  If you would like to host the Traveling Bookshelf at your gallery, museum or business, we would be happy to get a message to the group’s leaders.  Email Lorie and Lizzie (members of PWA and contributors to the bookshelf – can you guess which ones they made?) at hello@2dnw.org.

White Spring Ranch Museum and Archive Library

White Spring Ranch is listed on the National Historical Registry and was the homestead of early settlers in the wheat producing Palouse area south of Moscow Idaho. John Lorang and Mary Gesellchen Lorang created a successful farm and they and three generations of the family preserved all its history from its founding in 1885 to the present day. Thousands of artifacts are in the archive library collection. The museum is supported by grants and donations and by students and faculty from Washington State University and the University of Idaho.

With a minimal budget of grants and donations, we have become a gathering site for students, artists and volunteers with all kinds of skills to restore the: 1878 Log cabin, c.1880’s Curio cabin, c.1873-1904 Historical Farmhouse and 160 years of letters, journals, books and photographs into an onsite and online library. Learn of the farming history of Idaho and details of American life for the last 160 years.
